Audi TT Mk1 - How to drain Engine Coolant
Today with the Project Audi TT Mk1 I am draining the Engine Coolant.
Sometimes referred to as Antifreeze, it is so much more than that as it also allows your coolant water to boil at a higher temperature and give better resistance to overheating than purely running with water. So this is can also be called draining your antifreeze from your car or removing antifreeze.
Audi added a handy drainage tap to the coolant loop that you can access from below the car, just behind the radiator.
Simply turn the tap and the coolant drains out.
This is a short video on "how do I remove the engine coolant from my car"

I liked how you went through every step. Very helpful for beginners. As a German Mechanic I would suggest putting new Coolant after 2 liters of water while the drain plug is still loose. Once you see the new Coolant come out of the pipe then you can tighten the plug so there's no Water remaining and fill till between min and max in the end don't forget to vent the air out of the cooling system. Just warm up the car to 90° till the radiators turn on, the thermostate opens up and only then the second cooling circle opens up and sucks in more coolant. Make sure to refill the whole time so the cooling system doesn't run dry. I wouldn't use water for flushing the system because it doesn't has any lubricant in it. Normal water can build lime which can damage the water pump. If water pump is dead the car overheats and could cause Major damages. Sorry for my poor English. Anyway very helpful video.
Damm shame I missed this
Good one - thanks!
No problem! I hope it helps you service your fiesta! 👍
Nice! What’s the song?
Hi there. Its in the video description with a link but it is called Lakey Inspired - Chill Day
@@andycharger cheers! Enjoy the cars 🎉

Thank you vic
Can you tell me how you know if your car was recalled for the rear spoiler? If so how was it fitted glue screws etc I like originality but thinking of maybe removing the rear wing. Car sept 1999 v reg. Thanks
All cars were issued for recall but it was down to the owner to take up the option. There are still a few "non spoiler" cars around although they are very rare. If the car was manufactured after the recall date, it was automatically fitted with the spoiler. The Spoiler is bolted to the boot lid.
Nice video Andy 👌
Thank you Peter!
Hi Andy, great video! after watching this video i decided to tackle the job myself on my Mk1 TT, the connector was loose without any holding bracket and being heavy handed i managed to pull the connector off leaving the black brown and white wires exposed. the black wire is to pin number 1 but could you tell me which wires go to pins 2 & 3. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi. I am not sure of the pin out for the sensor but will see what I can find buddy!
Thanks Andy
I have nightmares with that sound. That’s the sound of usually a big expense coming. Everything there’s a problem, there’s the f*cking beep.
It was a lovely evening. Great company, great cars.😊
Good to see you as always Bob!
Thank you for including me. Just drove down for a Track Day tune today. 538 miles round trip. See my grin. We found about 260 hp at the wheels.
How is that car now Vic? Super fast?
@@andycharger I went to 8" / 18" nine spoke wheels with 100 to 112 twenty mil adaptors. I've tried 245's and then 235's. Both rub. I'll get 225's and see how it goes. I have to be careful as in 2nd gear, if I push the gas pedal to the floor, the tires spin: the whole reason for wider tires. And, appearance. I"m seeing about 260 hp at the wheels now with more torque earlier. While on the rack, we discovered the left lower ball joint needs replacing. A new experience for me. Thank you Andy for your wishbone replacement video.
@@vicelse8980 check your haldex. If your car is a 225, it should be Quattro and the wheels should not spin 👍
@@andycharger Fast is more a general term for this. I don't shift gears to pass, I just lightly press on the pedal; I have to watch or I get to 100 and wonder how. It just happens now it seems. I've gotten so many speeding tickets, I have a file. Not so much any more. My worst example is getting 3 in a row at the start of a trip before I ever got out of TX heading West when I had the '01 740iL. Now, with the roadster, I like to do about 55 on US highways, having to shift going thru all the little towns. Arrival mañana has become a fluid thing.
@@andycharger Thanks.

have to ask I bought an audi tt 2005 quattro and the carfax has literally every single service done.... its at 147k water pump timing belt finished at 100k clutch at 120k .... and oil changes every 4k mles from previous owner... however I never saw a haldex or "rear differential service" on his car fax safe to say my haldex unit could be damaged or should I be fine? I'm gonna change the oil cause I think its factory OEM filter and oil... since 0 miles...
Definitely change the oil buddy 👍
@@andycharger yea seems like previous owner took good care of it im just not sure if most owners are aware that haldex unit needs to be serviced every 40k lol

Very helpful mate. Reached to the very end but when it came to pulling out the plasticy bit from the slot it just snapped and nows it's stuck in that hole. How doomed am I 😅 is there a way to sort this?
You should be able to poke it out still mate. 👍
@@andycharger wow that's good to know. A quick question mate is that socket where you insert the plastic bit all metal? I just don't want to end up damaging something in there while trying to get the bits out.

Andy, Andy, Andy! It's me, your biggest fan from the states singing collective praises on your videos! Watching your videos has given me the guts to go for the glory and replace MULTIPLE items on my TT! A butt load of sensors, twin fans, rear shocks, sway bar links and bushings and the lower control arms and balljoints! YEP! I jammed my rotund 73 y/o body under my jacked and safely supported car and thanks to your instruction, the right tools, and my residual training in Tai Chi & Yoga was able to single handedly complete the task! When America is ready to swallow it's collective pride and ask to be reinstated with GB I hope we can share a pint! (Just wish Sarah N Tune can join us, she's a prettier mechanic and damned knowledgeable as well!) :)
Ha ha! Thanks for your kind words Stephen! I am in Nashville in September if that is any good for a pint? Keep working on that car and keep me up to date with the progress! Andy
@@andycharger Nashville is out of my range but I'll keep up the work on the TT, (Careful while in Nashville, the southern accent is so strong that even Virginian's sometimes need an interpreter :)
Great detailed video, curious what your cars mileage was when you carried this out? My mk1 TT is on 110k miles and never had any low oil pressure-related issues.
If it’s more than 5 years since it was done, I would do it for peace of mind.
Have you got a link for the new ones? Thanks 🙏
Hi Andy. Great vlog. I have a 2003 225 Quattro TT just one owner for the last 20 years before me. It’s simply immaculate! Can you advise on the best place to sell ? need to sell for personal reasons. It’s truly unique with 53 k on the clock
Hi there. Nice and low miles you have there. Best place to get it listed would be Autotrader in my opinion. Marketplace is full of so many Cat N cars (like this one) that its a minefield and serious buyers tend to give it a miss. Ebay is good but be prepared to take less money and pay a final value fee for it. Unless you stick a minimum value you want against it. Be wary of people trying to low ball you and good luck with the sale buddy.
Great little video thanks
Thank you very much. I am glad it helped you buddy.
Thank you Andy, why hire a mechanic for a lot of money when you can do it yourself for maybe half the price. 🙂
Exactly this tosch! Thanks for your feedback
This was very interesting. Thank you
Thank you for your feedback! 👍
hi andy, is there a way of adjusting the rear clips that hold the hood please?
The timing chain is a problem with most cars that have them. I don't know why the manufacturer doesn't engineer the timing chain, then add a fudge factor to that calculation making the chain slightly more expensive but much more robust. I think the reason is that enthusiast are the only ones that care. Most modern car consumers don't even know there is a motor (they are moire interested in the electronic goodies rather than what makes the car actually go), and rarely check their oil resulting in catastrophic failures. I have a pre-owned Touareg 3.6l and one of the first things I did was have the timing chain checked for stretch (it was good thank god)
Great video as always Mr C as 3.2 owner i know nothing about the 1.8T set up so great way for me get good understanding for any future plans:)
Thanks Wayne. You know I love going into the detail!
Rebuild the engine reusing the fun parts but strengthening or replacing stuff, like valve guides/springs (?), rings, bearings, seals.
go on charger put some forged rods and a big turbo and full send it

Always feels like on the Isle every TT is siliconed, Open Filter, and mapped😅 BTW in Germany you would get a good fine for washing and polluting at your ground.
My wife and I wash our cars using the two bucket method with just a hose anytime, no noise and it affects nobody. The water goes to sewage. Ruhezeit is how the UK was 50 years ago, I miss the total quietness of Sundays, now most shops are open. It would however frustrate me having to take my car to be cleaned, as it’s a task I enjoy. I have the silicon😮KN, no Map…

Yes you could do that but that is definitely more involved. A quick sliver of plastic will definitely get you out of trouble!
